There are no plans for any brick-and-mortar casino expansion of sports gambling in the state of New York for the immediate future. However, in the longer view, eventual development is considered almost inevitable.
Mobile sports gambling is finally going to become a reality next year. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo originally stated that he is “not a fan” of mobile or online gambling. He also took a shot at New Jersey offering the option, saying that the revenue generated from their mobile sports gambling would be a “rounding error” in New York state. But after women lined up around the block to accuse the Democrat of sexual harassment, he wasn’t so disparaging about the matter. The conceited Cuomo also noticed that 84% of all money that is wagered in New Jersey comes from mobile betting. With COVID-19 certain to bust an already stretched New York state budget, and with a full-court press of corruption and incompetence charges leveled at him, a humiliated and desperate Cuomo became more receptive to the idea of mobile wagering.
In particular, New York State Senator Joseph Abbaddo did not relent in his press for mobile sports gambling to be an additional option in the Empire State. In fact, Abbaddo remarked that New York’s state motto is “Excelsior,” which is Latin for “ever upward.” He flatly stated that the state is nowhere near living up to its marquee when it comes to sports gambling. Addabbo believes that COVID-19 will force New York to turn to mobile sports gambling to help bridge the state budget. Addabbo estimates that New York state is going to fall $10 billion short of pre-coronavirus projections. He insisted that it was irresponsible not to consider mobile sports betting in this situation.
Sports available for wagering action in New York include pro and college football, pro and college basketball, pro hockey, pro baseball, soccer, auto racing, boxing, mixed martial arts, and golf.
