February 5, 2025The penultimate stop on the West Coast Swing has the PGA Tour in the Arizona desert for this week’s WM Phoenix Open. One of the more raucous and popular stops on the season schedule, the tournament will once again conclude on Super Bowl Sunday as a lead in to the big game. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler made his season debut last week earning a top 10 at Pebble Beach and opened as the prohibitive favorite at Proline+. Scheffler won back to back titles in 2022 and 2023 but was denied a three-peat last year, though he did secure a fourth straight top 10 finish. There is a significant increase on the golf betting odds to second favorite Justin Thomas. Defending champion Nick Taylor was a big underdog last year but triumphed in a playoff for his fourth career Tour victory.
Venue: The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has hosted the event since 1987 and it is one of the most popular stops on Tour. A tidy 7,261 yards at par 71 and at altitude, we typically see low scores. Taylor’s 21-under last year was the best score since Phil Mickelson matched the tournament record of 28-under in 2013. In addition six of the previous nine tournaments required extra holes to determine a winner.
Last Year: Taylor emerged victorious with a birdie on the second playoff hole to outlast Charley Hoffman. The table was set in the opening round when Taylor carded a course record-tying 60. He also used three birdies on the last four holes on Sunday to force a playoff. Taylor earned the win a year after a runner-up finish to Scottie Scheffler. In defense of his 2023 title Scheffler finished tied for third with Sam Burns three shots back. Justin Thomas and Jason Day rounded out the top five.

Scottie Scheffler +275
Showing no signs of rust from an injury that put him on the shelf for a few months, Scheffler made his season debut at Pebble Beach and continued his torrid pace with another top 10. That ended a streak of two straight victories that included the Tour Championship and the unofficial Hero World Challenge last year. Scheffler has had great success in this tournament with wins in 22 and 23 and a T3 last year. He also was T7 in 2021.
Value Picks
Tom Kim +2502
A crowd favorite at most of his events, Kim also feeds off the crowds and there’s none wilder than in this tournament. It also helps that he got a confident-boosting display at Pebble Beach finishing T7, though a closing 70 still resonates. Kim had a nice comeback last year finishing T17 with three straight rounds of 67 or better following an opening 74.
Sepp Straka +3488
If Straka can finish T7 at Pebble Beach while playing through an illness imagine what he can do when he isn’t bothered. Straka is on a nice run of form finishing among the top 15 in four of his last five events, including a win last month at the American Express and boasts favorable odds.
Nick Taylor +5003
Taylor had problems in this event in previous years but has seemingly worked those out as his career has flourished. In 2023 only the world’s best player prevented him from winning as Taylor finished two swings behind Scheffler for solo second. He set a course record with an opening 60 last year on his way to a playoff win. The start of 2025 has been good with a win at the Sony Open and a T12 at the AMX.
Billy Horschel +6501
A mainstay at this event Horschel has made the cut in 11 of 12 starts with two top 10s among his five top 25s. That alone makes him a worthy pick in alternate markets. However, a strong run coming in makes him a threat for the outright as well. A T9 at Pebble Beach followed a T21 at the AMX.
Andrew Novak +8005
If Novak continues to play the way he has lately he won’t be a sleeper pick much longer. You can still buy him at odds that make the move worthwhile. Novak was solo third at the Farmers Insurance Open and T13 at Pebble Beach overcoming a third round 75. He was T8 in his tournament debut last year opening with a pair of 65s.
