WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Championship Picks

By Betmaker Team

The world’s best golfers are in Texas this week for the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Championship. A total of 63 of the top 69 in the latest world golf rankings will be in the field, including World No. 1 Jon Rahm and last year’s runner-up in this event, Scottie Scheffler. Bryson DeChambeau is also expected to make his return, as he has missed the last two months due to a wrist injury. The six players who qualified for this event but are not playing are Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Sam Burns, Harris English, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith. Jon Rahm is listed as the favorite this week at odds of +1200.

Venue: This event takes place at Austin Country Club which is a par 71 that measures 7,108 yards. This will be the sixth time that the Austin Country Club has hosted the event. The course was designed by Pete Dye and has been a very fair test for the players, as long hitters like Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson have won in addition to short hitters like Kevin Kisner.

Last Year: Billy Horschel beat Scottie Scheffler 2 and 1 in the championship match. It was a definite surprise, as Horschel had failed to get past the round of 16 in his previous four tries in this event. Matt Kuchar finished in third place, as he defeated Victor Perez 2 and 1 in the consolation match.

Jon Rahm +1300

If you have followed me on a weekly basis then you know how I go on and on about not betting favorites to win a golf tournament because they don’t hold any value. It has been so long that I can’t even remember the last favorite that won when going off as the favorite. Rahm has not looked like the world’s top ranked player in recent months and I don’t think there is any value in taking him as the favorite this week.

Value Picks

Viktor Hovland +1400

The picks for me this week are going to be all about players who I think can get into the round of 16. Once there, anything can happen. Hovland has a relatively easy group I think, as Will Zalatoris isn’t playing that well and while Sepp Straka and Cameron Tringale have had their moments, they shouldn’t be much of a threat. Hovland should do well this week and is a deserving top contender.

Xander Schauffele +2200

I think Schauffele has one of the easiest groups to get through to the round of 16. The only real threat might be Tony Finau, but he is not playing well lately. I can’t see Lucas Herbert or Takumi Kanaya providing much of a test. I think Schauffele gets through to the round of 16 fairly easily and there is no question that Schauffele can handle the pressure of match play.

Daniel Berger +2700

I see some value in Berger this week. His main threat in his group would be Tyrrell Hatton but I don’t know that I like Hatton in a match play event. He is known to lose his cool and that is simply a recipe for disaster in match play. I can’t see Si Woo Kim or Christiaan Bezuidenhout providing too much of a test. I think Berger could be a serious threat at double-digit odds this week.

Sergio Garcia +4100

I will take a flyer on Sergio at big odds. He will have to get past Collin Morikawa, but it is hard to like the form of Morikawa right now, as he didn’t play well at all last week at the Valspar. Garcia is very familiar with this course and I don’t see any reason he can’t make the round of 16.

Talor Gooch +6500

I am really surprised the number on Gooch is so high. He gets a favorable group, as he has Bryson DeChambeau who hasn’t played competitive in a couple of months and then it is Lee Westwood and Richard Bland. Gooch has a very favorable path to the round of 16 and at these odds he is worth a flyer to win it all.
