A strong field is assembled for the Wells Fargo Championship this week with Rory McIlroy listed as the golf betting favorite at BetRivers. Many of the world’s best are in the field for this “designated” event with the big prize purse, but missing will be World No. 1 Jon Rahm and World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler. Most of the rest of the world’s Top 20 in the latest World Golf Rankings are in the field. We are coming off another winning week, as we went 3-2 with the matchups at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. Let’s look at Wells Fargo Championship matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Max Homa

Tournament Notes: Quail Hollow is back as the tournament host this year after missing last year due to the Presidents Cup. The Green Mile is one of the features of this course and the closing three holes played nearly a shot over par two years ago. Quail Hollow Club is a par 71 that measures 7,538 yards. It has consistently been ranked as one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour.

Hovland, Viktor +107 vs. Finau, Tony

If you follow my picks then you know that I routinely will go against the previous week’s winner in the matchups. I will do so again this week, as I would be surprised if Finau doesn’t have some sort of letdown. In this matchup, we get one of my favorites to win this week in Hovland and we get him at plus money. He leads the field in all-around ranking. He tied for third two years ago in this event. I’ll take Hovland in this matchup.

Mitchell, Keith -164 vs. Riley, Davis

I think Mitchell can contend this week, as he finished tied for 8th in this event in 2019 and he tied for 3rd two years ago. He has played well this season and ranks fifth in all-around on the PGA Tour. I’ll lay the price in this one and take Mitchell.

Day, Jason -122 vs. Hatton, Tyrrell

One of the popular picks to win this week is Day who won this event in 2018. He comes in playing better than he has in a while and we get him at a short price in this matchup against Hatton.

Kim, Tom -110 vs. Conners, Corey

I think it is time to get back on the Tom Kim train starting with this week. He played okay at the Presidents Cup last year at this locale and I think that experience will help him this week. Kim has the precision to do well on this difficult course. I will take Kim at the short price in this matchup against Conners.

Homa, Max +112 vs. Im, Sungjae

I just can’t resist taking the defending champion at plus money. Homa has played well not only in this event, but at Quail Hollow. He went a perfect 4-0 in his matches at the Presidents Cup. I respect the game of Im, but I think Homa is simply the better player and we get plus money.
