The Genesis Invitational Matchup Picks

Sportsbook
By Tom Wilkinson

The Genesis Invitational in California this week is another of the enhanced prize purse events on the PGA Tour schedule so we get a super field again this week. All of the top players in the world are entered in this event and the tournament will also mark the first event for Tiger Woods since July of last year. Jon Rahm is a slight favorite in golf betting odds at BetRivers to win this event, followed by Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. I am coming off a 4-2 week with the matchups at the WM Phoenix Open. Let’s look at The Genesis Invitational matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Joaquin Niemann

Tournament Notes: Riviera is an old school course that players really love. It is a fair test of golf that measures 7,322 yards. Greens in regulation is a key stat, as it is all about sticking approaches close this week.

Burns, Sam -101 vs. Young, Cameron

Burns is now one of the top players in the world and he is a bit undervalued. He finished sixth last week in Phoenix and he was 11th at the American Express. He is ranked in the Top 20 on the PGA Tour in total driving and he ranks in the Top 20 in Shots Gained: Putting. Young may very well be a player to watch as his career develops, but right now Burns is the better player. I’ll take Burns in this matchup.

Power, Seamus -120 vs. Rodgers, Patrick

Power has looked good recently with top 20 finishes in five full field events and he won in Bermuda in the fall. He has proven he can play well against tough fields, as he finished in the top 15 in two majors last year. I’ll lay the small price and take him in this matchup against Rodgers.

Thomas, Justin +150 vs. Rahm, Jon

I just can’t pass up this big price on Thomas who is one of my top choices to win this week in the odds article. I know that Rahm has been on a major roll this season, but Thomas looked good last week and he has played well at Riviera in the past. I’ll take the big plus price on Thomas.

Scott, Adam -120 vs. Rose, Justin

Scott is the tournament’s all-time earnings leader and he won this tournament in 2020. He took last week off so he should be raring to go for one of his favorite events. Rose took last week off after winning at Pebble Beach so perhaps he will not have a letdown, but I still think it will be hard for him to play at a top level again this week. I’ll take Scott in this matchup.

Kyoung-Hoon Lee -105 vs. Si Woo Kim

Lee has made the cut in his last four tries at the Genesis and we know that he can drive the ball well, as he ranks 16th on the PGA Tour in total driving. Lee is also ranked 9th in greens in regulation. We will likely know the result of this matchup early, as Kim is all or nothing, as he contends or misses the cut. I’ll take Lee in this matchup.
