February 5, 2025St. John’s at Connecticut Same Game Parlay Recap
If you had doubts about the St. John’s Red Storm, an impressive comeback road win over two-time defending national champion Connecticut on Friday, Feb. 7 in a Big East showdown of top 20 teams should erase them. I wasn’t convinced and backed UConn on the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook with the Huskies laying 4-points. Turned out it was the wrong move as the Johnnies won their 10th straight game, 68-62, overcoming a 14-point deficit in hostile territory.
St. John’s has shown remarkable resiliency this season rallying from a double digit deficit to win for the fifth time this season. The Johnnies have also helped their backers getting a seventh payout in their last nine games. SJU’s leading scorer RJ Luis Jr. came up large in the final minutes scoring six of his game-high 21 points in the last 2:16 of the second half. And they pulled out the win despite going through a stretch in the second half where they missed 11 consecutive shots.

The Huskies couldn’t take advantage of SJU’s cold spell thanks to some cold shooting of their own. UConn shot just 39.2 percent from the floor for the game and was 8 of 29 from behind the arc. We typically don’t see the Huskies struggle to score the basketball and they don’t often commit 22 turnovers. They did in this game leading to 18 St. John’s points. UConn got a boost from the return of Liam McNeeley, who missed the previous eight games with an injury. He had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but was just 4 of 15 from the field.
Poor shooting all around allowed the teams to cash the UNDER on the college basketball odds. UConn’s leading scorer Solo Ball had 13 points in the first half but was held scoreless over the final 20 minutes. With the loss the Huskies fell to 4-4 SU and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games.

Two of the best in the Big East square off in a top 20 battle when the St. John’s Red Storm visits the two-time defending national champion Connecticut Huskies on Friday night. The Johnnies took over first place in the league standings behind an 8-game winning streak that will get tested in a matchup with Marquette on Wednesday. And the Red Storm is looking at a crucial part of their schedule with back-to-back matchups against ranked foes. UConn had lost three of five games before beating DePaul and Marquette and earning their first payout on the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook in five games in the latter. The Huskies have commanded the series recently winning four straight and six of the last seven meetings, but the Johnnies had success at the betting window with five payouts in that span.

After several down seasons by their standards the Johnnies have rebounded under Rick Pitino as they look for consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in a decade. They got a game closer to that goal beating Providence 68-66 on Saturday with Kadary Richmond hitting the tie-breaking shot with three seconds left on the clock. St. John’s hasn’t played a lot of close games recently with only one contest in the previous seven games of their current winning streak decided by fewer than eight points.
The win also allowed the Johnnies to take over first place in the Big East standings heading into Wednesday’s matchup with No. 11 Marquette. It’ll be a short turnaround with No. 19 UConn just two nights later. And despite winning 19 of their first 22 games SJU doesn’t have a signature win on their resume. Their only game against a ranked opponent was back in November when then No. 13 Baylor beat the Johnnies 99-98 in overtime. Since that loss SJU has won 14 of 15 games and is enjoying the best start in four decades.
The Johnnies got some good news ahead of their important 2-game stretch with the return of point guard Deivon Smith. He had missed three of the previous four games due to injury and chiseled off some rust against Providence. He scored only three points in the game and was 1 of 10 from the field, but for the year he’s averaging 9.9 points and connecting on 41 percent of his field goals. He’s also a key to the defense that holds opponents to 65.2 points per game.
UConn looked every bit the championship team in dismantling Marquette, 77-69 on Saturday. Prior to that game the Huskies alternated wins and losses in their previous six while going 1-5 as a college basketball odds pick in that span. They were also on the verge of exiting the top 25 but never trailed against the No. 9 team in the country. UConn improved to 16-6 overall but they’ve been a losing proposition at 10-12 ATS.
The absence of third-leading scorer Liam McNeely has impacted the offense. He hasn’t played since Jan. 1 and the team’s scoring average dropped below 80 points per game by scoring less than 73 points five times in the last eight games. The Huskies got a boost from Solo Ball in the Marquette game scoring 25 points on 7 of 9 shooting from three-point range with 11 rebounds.
UConn got the win despite turning the ball over 25 times. They offset those miscues by shooting 59.5 percent from the field and 63.2 percent from behind the arc. The Huskies have been efficient on offense averaging 79.9 points and ranking 12th nationally in field goal percentage. Although they failed to earn a payout in their last five home games I do like UConn at home against a team that played two nights earlier and lacks a signature win.
