Rocket Mortgage Classic Picks

There are just two events remaining before the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and next week’s Wyndham Championship. World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay is the highest ranked player in the field this week and he is listed as the golf betting favorite at odds of +1000. Will Zalatoris is the other player ranked in the Top 15 in the latest World Golf Rankings in the field at No. 13. Other top players in the field include Cameron Young who is the likely Rookie of the Year on the PGA Tour, last week’s winner Tony Finau, Max Homa, Harris English and Kevin Kisner. Rickie Fowler, who has become kind of the face for this event, is also in the field. Let’s take a look at Rocket Mortgage Classic picks.

Venue: The North course at Detroit Golf Club is the site for this week’s event. It is a par 72 that measures 7,370 yards. The Detroit Golf Club is more than one hundred years old, but the course was updated in 2019. The course has one of the easiest holes on the PGA Tour, the par-5 17th hole that averages a half a stroke under par. Overall, Detroit Golf Club is considered an easy course.

Key Stat: This course is all about wedge play and putting. Proximity inside 150 yards is a key stat to look at along with shots gained putting. It is interesting to note that two of the three previous winners of this event were first-time PGA Tour winners.

Last Year: Cameron Davis picked up his first PGA Tour win last season in a playoff. He won a three-man playoff, as he birdied the fifth playoff hole to defeat Troy Merritt. Joaquin Niemann was eliminated on the first playoff hole. Niemann had a chance to win in regulation but missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole. Hank Lebioda and Alex Noren tied for fourth place.

Favorite

Patrick Cantlay +1000

The favorite finally won last week as Tony Finau benefited by an epic collapse by Scott Piercy to win the 3M Open. You knew there would be a favorite that finally won, but you are still very much in the red if you have backed golf betting favorites this year. Cantlay is highly ranked, but it still hasn’t been a banner year for him and I definitely don’t trust his putting. I am not taking Cantlay at odds this low.

Value Picks

Cameron Young +1600

It should only be a matter of time before Young gets his first win, and it could be this week. He has had four top 3 finishes this season, and this course should set up for him really well it helps that putting is one of his strengths. I definitely don’t want to miss out when Young gets his first win.

DraftKings Sportsbook ReviewKevin Kisner +3700

You have to give Kisner a chance, as he is an excellent putter and he is the only player in the field with two top-10 finishes in this event.

Russell Henley +4200

Henley is the best in the field in proximity under 150 yards and it really isn’t close. If this stat is critical, and everything suggests it is, then Henley should contend for the win this week. We definitely get some attractive odds on Henley as he is listed at more than 40-1

Adam Hadwin +4200

I am going to put Hadwin and Kirk on the list this week simply because they rank highly in our key stat of proximity under 150 yards.

Chris Kirk +4200

Kirk shows up every now and then and contends and what I said with Hadwin goes for Kirk, as he ranks high in our key stat of the week.

Denny McCarthy +4200

If this turns into a putting contest, then McCarthy is the guy I want to be putting my money on. He is clearly the top putter in the field and there is no reason he can’t contend this week.

Mark Hubbard +6000

If the scoring is low, and there is every reason to think it will be this week, then Hubbard is someone to watch. He is excellent in iron play and inputting, and that is where the emphasis will be this week. He has seven top 35 finishes this season. He checks a lot of boxes this week and we get a longshot price.
