RBC Heritage Matchup Picks

By Tom Wilkinson

The RBC Heritage is getting a very strong field this week, as almost all of the world’s top golfers are in the field. This is a designated event which means a $20 million dollar prize purse, with over $3 million going to the winner. World No. 1 Jon Rahm is listed as the favorite at BetRivers after winning The Masters last week. World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is listed as the second choice in the golf betting odds. The one PGA Tour player in the Top 5 in the latest World Golf Rankings not in the field is Rory McIlroy who decided not to play. We swept the board last week, going 5-0 with the matchups at The Masters. Let’s look at RBC Heritage matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Jordan Spieth

Tournament Notes: Harbour Town is very much a course where approaches are critical. Distance off the tee is not as important as positioning off the tee. Putting doesn’t tend to be quite as important as normal, simply because the greens are so small.

Scheffler, Scottie -114 vs. Rahm, Jon

I am a little surprised that Rahm is even playing this week. It is hard to see how he can be focused after winning The Masters last week. Scheffler also played well last week but was simply too far behind to make a rally on Sunday. Scheffler has finished in the top-12 in his last ten tournaments. I’ll take Scheffler in this matchup.

Morikawa, Collin -114 vs. Schauffele, Xander

One of my picks to win this week in the odds article is Morikawa. He finished in a tie for 7th in this event a couple of years ago. He has a scoring average of 69 in his 12 previous rounds at Harbour Town. He comes in playing well, with a tie for 10th last week at The Masters. I think his skill set is a bit better suited for this course than is Schauffele’s. I’ll take Morikawa in this matchup.

Young, Cameron -114 vs. Spieth, Jordan

Young tied for 3rd in this event a year ago when he played it for the first time. He plays well nearly every week and is coming off a tie for 7th last week. I know Spieth is the defending champ, but he came out and said after The Masters that he is simply mentally tired. I’ll take Young in this matchup.

Fitzpatrick, Matthew -114 vs. Hatton, Tyrrell

Fitzpatrick played well last week, as he was par or better in all four rounds and he finished in a tie for 10th. He has played well at Harbour Town in the past with three top 15 finishes. I have been going against Hatton lately, as I still think he is hurt and he hasn’t taken any time off since his injury. I’ll take Fitzpatrick in this matchup.

Lowry, Shane -118 vs. Hatton, Tyrrell

Lowy has played well in this event with three top 10 finishes. He comes in playing well with three top 20 finishes in his last six starts. This is also another matchup play against Hatton who simply doesn’t look healthy. I’ll lay the small price and take Lowry in this matchup.
