Mexico Open at Vidanta Matchup Picks

The Mexico Open at Vidanta begins on Thursday with World No. 1 Jon Rahm listed as the golf betting favorite at BetRivers. All of the top players in the world except for Rahm and Tony Finau are bypassing this week’s event. It means a very top-heavy field where a longshot could hit at a big price if Rahm or Finau do not win. The field is definitely one of the weakest we have seen in recent memory on the PGA Tour other than an alternate event. We are coming off another excellent week, as we went 4-1 with the matchups at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Let’s look at Mexico Open at Vidanta matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Jon Rahm

Tournament Notes: Vidanta Vallarta is a par 71 that measures 7,456 yards. The scoring was pretty good last year with the field average at just over 70, but there are some hard holes, as the 8th, 10th, 16th and 17th were among the top 50 in hardest holes on the PGA Tour last season. That being said, the 7th is the easiest par 4 of any hole on the PGA Tour. It measures just 297 yards.

Hojgaard, Nicolai -125 vs. McNealy, Maverick

It has been a good run of late for Hojgaard who has four top 15 finishes worldwide including a runner-up finish at Corales. He led the field in distance off the tee in that event and he was tied for the lead in greens-in-regulation. Distance off the tee is going to be important this week, so I’ll take Hojgaard in this matchup.

Rodgers, Patrick -129 vs. Jaeger, Stephan

Rodgers is having a nice season, but he has yet to win on the PGA Tour. This would seem to be a good week with only a couple of top players in the field. Rodgers had a solo fifth in San Antonio and he was 10th in this event a year ago. I’ll take him in this matchup against Jaeger.

List, Luke -110 vs. Bramlett, Joseph

We mentioned distance earlier and the next two matchups are going to focus on distance off the tee. We haven’t seen much of List on leaderboards this season, but one area in which he does well is distance off the tee. I expect him to play well this week and we get a short price in this matchup.

Champ, Cameron +112 vs. Daffue, MJ

A big bomber off the tee is Champ so he should have success on this course. I don’t take Champ very often in matchups, as the rest of his game is a bit suspect, but this is definitely a course where he can do well. I’ll take him at plus money in this matchup.

Reavie, Chez -122 vs. Molinari, Francesco

We know that Molinari is not long off the tee so he is at a disadvantage this week. Reavie has struggled at times this season, but he played well at the Valero with a tie for 6th and he tied for 11th at Harbour Town. He also finished in a tie for 13th in this event a year ago. I’ll lay the small price and take him in this matchup against Molinari.
