BMW Championship Picks

The FedExCup Playoffs are down to the final 70 players who made it into this week’s BMW Championship. The field will be cut further after this week, as only the Top 30 players in the FedExCup standings will make it into next week’s TOUR Championship. Will Zalatoris took over the top spot in the FedExCup standings after winning last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, but he is not the favorite to win this week. That honor once again goes to Rory McIlroy, who is listed at odds of +1000. Zalatoris and Patrick Cantlay are the co-second choices at odds of +1400.

Venue: The South Course at Wilmington Country Club is a par 71 that measures 7,534 yards. It was course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1959 and re-worked by Andrew Green in 2021 after a tornado damaged the course in 2020.

Key Fact: It is worth noting that no player has ever defended his title at the BMW Championship since it became part of the FedExCup Playoffs in 2007. Three of the last four tournaments have been decided in a playoff.

Last Year: Patrick Cantlay was able to get past Bryson DeChambeau in a six-hole playoff to win last year’s BWM Championship. Cantlay shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday, as did DeChambeau. The two finished at 27-under par for the tournament. Sungjae Im finished four shots back in third, while Rory McIlroy finished fourth.

Rory McIlroy +1000

McIlroy was favored last week and he didn’t even make the cut. I say every week that golf favorites are overvalued and that is the case once again this week. McIlroy is definitely capable of winning this event, but that can be said about countless golfers in this field. I am definitely not taking McIlroy at odds this low.

Value Picks

Jon Rahm +1400

We know that this course favors golfers who are long off the tee and Rahm definitely fits that criterion. He played well last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, as he had four rounds in the 60’s. He was third in the field in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green. This is the week he sets himself up to win the FedExCup.

Collin Morikawa +1800

I had Morikawa last week and I am coming right back on him this week. He looks really close to putting it all together and having a big week. We know he has the talent to win marquee events and he is showing signs of getting back to his top form.

Sungjae Im +2700

Im played well in this event a year ago, and he played well last week, finishing 12th. He seems to have an affinity to this course, as he has finished in the Top 12 in two of the last three years. I expect him to be in the mix this week, and we get decent odds of 27-1.

Joohyung Kim +2900

It is hard not to be impressed with Kim. He is just 20 years old and already has a win with more to come. He doesn’t have a lot of experience, but that hasn’t seemed to matter, and he might just surprise everyone again and get into contention to win the FedExCup.

Aaron Wise +5500

I’ll throw one long shot in this week and go with Wise at odds of 55-1. He played well in Memphis last week, and if he can get his putter going, he could be a threat to contend at the BMW.
