AT&T Byron Nelson Picks

World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler leads the field for this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson. While Scheffler is the headliner, defending champion K.H. Lee will be trying to make history, as he looks to win this event for the third straight season. Scheffler is listed as the betting favorite at odds of +400 at BetRivers. This week’s event is not a “designated event” so the field will not have a lot of top players in the week and it is held a week before the PGA Championship. Joining Scheffler in the field are Hideki Matsuyama and Tyrrell Hatton, among others. Let’s look at AT&T Byron Nelson picks.

Venue: TPC Craig Ranch is a par 71 that measures 7,414 yards. It opened in 2004 and has Zoysia fairways, bentgrass greens and Rowlett Creek.

Last Year: K.H. Lee won this event for the second straight season, as he shot a 9-under 63 in the final round. He defeated Jordan Spieth by one shot. Hideki Matsuyama shot a final round 62 to tie for third.

Scheffler, Scottie +400

The field this week is extremely top-heavy so there is a good chance one of the top four wins this event. Golf betting favorites have been a losing proposition for years and that has been the case again this season. Rory McIlroy was the favorite last week and he was never in contention. Scheffler is definitely the standout in this field, but I still can’t take him simply because he is listed as the favorite and his odds that are too low.

Value Picks

Hatton, Tyrrell +1200

You have to like the current form of Hatton who played well at the Wells Fargo Championship last week. He has three top-five finishes in his last six starts. He has never played at TPC Craig Ranch but he did well at TPC Scottsdale which was designed by Tom Weiskopf.

Kim, Tom +1400

This could be the week where Kim excels, as he will be playing at home on a course he knows really well. He played his first PGA Tour event on this course and finished in the Top 20. He has more experience now and it could be Kim getting his third PGA Tour win this week.

Montgomery, Taylor +4000

There was a time when Montgomery was getting a lot of attention, but he hasn’t played as well of late and the hype has cooled. He should do well at TPC Craig Ranch where putting will be critical. Montgomery is third in this field in Shots Gained: Putting in the last 36 rounds. He should benefit from the wide fairways this week.

Min Woo Lee +4500

We haven’t seen that much of Lee this season, as he has only played six PGA Tour events, but he played well at the Players in March finishing in a tie for 6th. He has played well on the DP World Tour and he knows how to win, as he has two victories on that tour. I’ll take a flyer on Lee at 45-1.

Spaun, J.J. +6600

I’ll take a flyer on Spaun at big odds this week. He has good numbers on the PGA Tour this season, including 19th in Greens in Regulation. His approach numbers are also very solid. He has also played well in Texas in the past. I’ll take Spaun as my longshot pick this week.
